 Formica as a genus is part of the Formicidae family, they are usually a medium size Ant, inhabiting wetter, often forested areas. There are around 300 recognised species still alive today with a few more extinct specimens. The genus contains both monogynous and polygynous species, they are also highly aggressive, and grow into the many thousands, this paired with the ability to spray Formica acid they can be a formidable opponent for many.
