Lasius Niger

They most common ant in the UK, You will recognise Lasius Niger as the black garden ant found throughout the UK. The can form large colonies and trails that stretch meters. These ants only have one queen in their colony, but she can live for many years.

Lasius are perfect for beginners as they are very hardy and easy to work with.

 Very interesting and fun to watch, master basic skills such as barriers and feeding easily and safely with these Ants.

Protein and Sugars are required for this colony: Wax Worms, roaches and Meal worms.

Temperature : Room temp is fine in the UK

They Hibernate from November until March

Colony Size when mature : 10,000

Mono/Poly: Monogyne ( one queen per colony)

Lasius Niger are Fully claustral so do not require feeding until first workers arrive

Lasius Flavus

Lasius Flavus commonly known as the yellow meadow ant

They spend a vast magority of their time underground farming root aphids.

Queens are a light brown with yellow a underbelly whilst workers are a lovely orange / yellow making for a truly beautiful Ant colony.

They are quite a timid species and very rarely found above ground apart from during Nuptial flight time.

Protein and Sugars are Required: Wax Worms / roaches /crickets are eaten by this Species.

Nesting: Test tube whilst founding , for best growth

 I recommend a natural set up although they will be ok in a man made set up. 

Temperature : UK room Temps are ok 

They Hibernate between November and March

Colony Size when mature : 10,000

Mono/Poly: Monogyne and Polygyne when in a very large natural set up where queens can be kept separately from each other.

Fully/Semi claustral : Fully claustral- feeding not required until first workers

Lasius emaringatus

This awesome species has recently been discovered in select locations within the British isle, although common in Europe, Lasius emaringatus, love sugars, so ensure they have good access to a ready source. 

They will actively avoid nesting in damp areas so a drier nest area is prefered.
